Concussions As A Type Of Traumatic Brain Injury - 1289 Words

Concussions, a type of traumatic brain injury, are a frequent concern for those playing sports, from children and teenagers to professional athletes. Repeated concussions are a known cause of various neurological disorders, most notably chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which in professional athletes has led to premature retirement, erratic behavior and even suicide. Over 1.6 million Americans have sustained concussion-related injuries. Because concussions cannot be seen on X-rays or CT scans, attempts to prevent concussions have been difficult. The dangers of repeated concussions have long been known for boxers and wrestlers; a form of CTE common in these two sports, dementia pugilistica, was first described in 1928. There is the potential of post-concussion syndrome, post-concussion syndrome is defined as a set of symptoms that may continue after a concussion is sustained. Along with the classification of post-concussion symptoms, the symptoms can also be described as immediate and delayed. Playing through concussion makes people more vulnerable to getting hit again, and that is why most sports have test that trainers will perform to prevent getting hit a second time. A second blow can cause a rare condition known as second-impact syndrome, which can result in severe injury or death. Second-impact syndrome is when an athlete suffers a second head injury before the brain has adequate time to heal in between concussions. Repeated concussions have been linked to a variety of neurological disorders among athletes, including CTE, Alzheimer s Disease, Parkinsonism and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis . Incidence It is estimated that as many as 1.6-3.8 million concussions occur in the US per year in competitive sports and recreational activities; this is a rough estimate, since as many as 50% of concussions go unreported. Concussions occur in all sports with the highest incidence in American football, hockey, rugby, soccer, and basketball. The Role of Cognitive Dissonance in Decision Making

The Role of Cognitive Dissonance in Decision Making Introduction When making decisions humans commonly fall victim to errors in logic and reasoning. Since the inception of the study of the mind, psychologists have endeavored to isolate the characteristics and causes of errors in human thinking. Researchers and theorists have developed categories of such errors: representativeness heuristics, availability heuristics, memory and hindsight biases, etc. . . . In other words, to err is human. In 1957, Festinger identified another phenomenon in human cognition--cognitive dissonance. Festinger theorized that humans experience negative emotions when performing behaviors that are contrary to their attitudes. These negative emotions,†¦show more content†¦However, they experience dissonance when they realize that they cannot know everything and their experience with the world is limited to a small sample. To reduce this dissonance, the representativeness heuristic is applied, thus pla cing everything into categories. Their small sample of the world is now representative of the whole, and dissonance is reduced. Second, the availability heuristic is a result of the tendency of people to confuse probability with imaginability (Plous, 1993). For instance, the probability of being killed by electrocution is greater than that of being killed in an airplane crash. However, most people can imagine (from news reports) the tragedy of a plane crash more easily than electrocution while standing in a puddle of water in their bathroom. Thus, they falsely believe, through the availability heuristic, that it is more dangerous to fly to Europe than to use a hairdryer in the bathtub. We can see how dissonance theory can give rise to this error in human reasoning. Again assuming that most people view themselves as the center of the universe, they experience dissonance when they realize that things can happen to them over which they have no control. To reduce this dissonance, they c reate an availability heuristic that says that things will only happen to them with the probability which they can imagine those events occurring. Third, the memory and hindsight biases show that humansShow MoreRelatedCognitive Dissonance Essay1632 Words   |  7 PagesCognitive dissonance can be described as the feeling of discomfort resulting from holding two conflicting beliefs. Your diagram should draw upon relevant core texts Classify at least four Virgin Atlantic events using the model you have provided Explain the impact of Virgin Atlantics marketing and events strategy Answer: Introduction: Virgin Atlantic is a major airline of UK owned by Richard Bransons Virgin Group and Singapore Airlines. Key people of the organization are Richard Branson, the founder; Craig Kreeger, CEO; and Stephen Murphy, Chairman. In 1984, Richard announced to provide a high quality, value for money airline, would be in operation soon. Three months later, after gaining licenses and staffs, the Airline first took into the skies in June 1984. In the recent perspective, the Board of Directors comprises of seven non-executive directors and two executive directors. The organization structure comp-rises of an Audit committee whose role is to review the accounting policies; the Remuneration committee, whose role is to consider various reports and make recommendation; the Safety governance that looks after the safety and security; and lastly, the Joint Venture Steering committee whose members act as representative of the organization (Virgin-atlantic.com 2016). The airliner has revenue of 2.93 billion with an operating income of 14.4 million. The annual profit of the Airline was 22.5 million compared to 12.4 million last year. According to the Annual Report 2015, Virgin Airline served 5,939,000 customers on 26,739 flights to 29 non-stops destination. The operating bases re London-Gatwick, London-Heathrow and Manchester that include almost 31 destinations. Current corporate goal of Atlantic Airline is to remain as competitive as possible by taking advantage of reducing costs. The ambition of the corporate organization is to become the most loved airline by the customers. They want to be uniquely Virgin Atlantic (Virgin-atlantic.com 2016). The scope of the paper is to analyze the marketing strategies undertaken by Virgin Atlantic and its impact on its business. SWOT analysis of Virgin Atlantic: Strengths: A brand extended beyond aviation: The Airline Company enjoys the positive perception of the fact that the brand has its operation apart from aviation. The Company never fails to represent the values such as quality, value for money, fun and individuality in its advertising campaigns that attracts customers. A strong Atlantic network: In 30 years of its journey, the North Atlantic network remained ata the core of its operation Joint venture with Delta: 49% share holder Delta Airline that operates between UK and United States brings huge share. There has been an increase in the revenue from 5% to 18%. Weaknesses: Poor profitability record: Virgin Atlantic reported a pre-tax loss of 74 million. As a consequence of it, even in the profitable stage the Company lags behind 1% of its revenue. Under-capitalized balance sheet: The average cash balance dropped from 445 million to 360 million. This rapid rate of cash burn resulted in one of the weaknesses of the Airline. Failure of Little Red: The domestic UK route between London Heathrow and Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen leased from Aer Lingus was named Little Red. The trend was a failure and did not help in achieving the target. Opportunities: Delta relationship might drive cost synergies: The Airline might draw its relation with the Delta to reduce the operating cost. 2. Merging and alliance: Merging with British Airways that would result in better operation. Lower expenditure cost and increasing new route option: The Airline has plans to extend its network to Tokyo, Mumbai and Cape Town. Threats: Overcapacity of North Atlantic: Due to over capacity, there has been demand-supply imbalances. Interference of EU in partnership: European Commission has been investigating the operation of partnership of the Airline that created a major threat to the company. Competition among the Gulf airlines: Three Gulf carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airlines, Etihad and Turkish Airlines are tough competitors. PESTLE ansalysis of Virgin Atlantic: Political United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and runs under the parliamentary system. Political scenario of the country is stable that provides opportunity to both domestic and international companies to operate in the nation. Economic UK ranks 5th in terms of its GDP. The country welcomes increasing Foreign Direct Investment (Thornton 2016). UK is a free market and provides opportunity for better business. Socio-cultural The Country is open to migration and that resulted in mixed ethnic group of population. People have high standard of living. Technological Being an economically developed country, the country has good access to technology. People are technologically advanced and uses digital and internet platform actively (Coursaris et al. 2014). Legal UKs law is flexible. The country has aviation laws that include aircraft trading, finance and leasing, commercial, litigation and dispute resolution (Thornton 2016). Environmental UK has strict environmental laws. The Country has laws for aviation industries that give guidelines related to environment and sustainability. Marketing mix: Marketing is a continually evolving discipline and is used actively to fight with the competition. Marketing mix is composed of four fundamental elements; product, place, promotion and people. Product The product that fits the requirement of the task of the consumers Place Place indicates the regions where the product should be available for the target group of people. Price The price of the product represents a good value of the product Promotion Promoting the product or service using various tools such as advertising, PR and others Marketing mix of Virgin Atlantic: The main objectives of the marketing strategies of Virgin Atlantic are: To secure a brand in the thought of people with a low budget: The main objective of the band is to create awareness in the mind of the people whenever they think of a dwarf budget to fly. Looking closely, Virgin Atlantic has been successful to reach in the top of mind awareness compared to British Airways. Delivering virginness: The Airline define the concept of Virginness by following six attributes: up-to-date, dynamic, innovative, stylish, helpful, fun. They aim to co-relate each of these attributes with brand preferences that are the key to ensure the efficacy of communication (Chao, Chen and Yeh 2015). Providing correct reasons to people to select Virgin Atlantic: The objective of the Airline is measured by increasing brand preferences of customers. It has been found that brand preference has increased from 49% to 73%. The marketing mix of Virgin Atlantic can be stated here: Product: The airline operates with a three-class cabin configuration- Economy, Premium Economy and Upper Class- the business class. Virgin Atlantic also maintains ten lounges that they named as the Club House that is located in New York, Boston, Washington D.C. and other western and European regions (Kaynak and Kucukemiroglu 2015). Place: The Airline has recently launched a new route to Detroit to increase the frequencies to other US destinations. With this approach, 70% of their flights serve the transatlantic market (Perreault, Cannon and McCarthy 2013). People: The target consumers are the regular users of airlines. Moreover, the recent approach of marketing is to target the consumers who look for a low budget airline (Evans 2012). Promotion: The Airline Company is using the digital media marketing platform to reach out to the targeted consumers. The company has been found to use social media and digital media like television commercials to take the initiative to promote their service (Stelzner 2012). Fig: Diagrammatic representation of Marketing Mix of Virgin Atlantic Special events of Virgin Atlantic Virgin Atlantic has come out with unique marketing and advertising strategies at regular interval. Some of these events can be discussed here: Still Red Hot campaign: The Still Red Hot campaign marked the 25th anniversary of the Airline. The campaign targeted the youth specially those belonging to the age group of 25 years. The campaign highlighted the changes in the brand and the perception of people on the Airline. The campaign was rolled to 13 major markets emphasizing mainly on US, UK and Australia (Coursaris et al. 2014). One-day campaign: Another recent campaign undertaken by the Airline was using the Twitter as the marketing platform. The campaign was again made to target the youth. The twit was trended with the caption one day, the participants were asked to narrate any incident starting with the phrase one day. Huge number of people was found to participate in the campaign, which ultimately resulted in the success of the campaign (Virgin-atlantic.com. 2016). Let it fly campaign: By the beginning of the year 2015, Virgin Atlantic came up with the most awaited advertising campaign, Let it Fly campaign. The objective behind the concept is to bring the customers ethos to life. The campaign aimed at attracting those customers who are passionate about looking for better experiences. The campaign encourages the idea to embrace human spirit and Let it fly. The campaign carries the message that life does not come twice, so one must go for it (Adageindia.in. 2016). Campaign for business traveler: In an advertising campaign in 2015, the Airline aimed at the consumers who travel for their business purpose. The campaign wanted to portray that business activities can be made adventurous if they prefer to travel by Virgin Atlantic. The campaign was equally successful and very nicely had put impact on the travelers (Anderson-Macdonald, Chandy and Zia 2014). Impact of Virgin Atlantics marketing and event strategies The marketing and event strategies have always tried to imply that Virgin Airlines has something to offer to its customers that no other Airline would offer. The message was delivered to increase the band preferences. UK has always been a strong market for Atlantic. The Red Hot campaign held great impact on not only advertising effect but other impact effect as well. The brand out performed throughout the World. All the campaigns were successful in fulfilling the objectives of the marketing (Chauhan 2015). The one-day campaign at Twitter also helped to fulfill the intension of attracting the target consumers to the campaign. Conclusion: By the end of the report it can be said that the marketing strategies of Virgin Atlantic had certain specific strategies to highlight. It always tried to target the consumers who look for a flight in budget. The Airline tried to portray that they are capable of providing everything provided by other Airline but in a budget less than the other Airline. All the campaigns were targeted for different segments of people and have successfully achieved the intention of the marketing purpose. References: Adageindia.in. 2016.Ad Age Homepage - AdAge. Quay Cranes Weight Management Problems

Abstract The employment of quay cranes assumes a variety of functions. Due to this, problems concerning scheduling and assignment of quay cranes arise. Cranes are to perform a variety of tasks when they are assigned to vessels.Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Quay Cranes Weight Management Problems specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The main issues researched in this matter are safety during the operation of quay cranes, algorithm of vessel priority and the pattern of assignment of cranes to new vessels when their previous tasks are complete. Literature Review In the contemporary world international trade is vital for the development of the world’s economy. Maritime transportation is one of the most cost-effective and popular means of international trade. Goods are handled at ports, where the container traffic experiences rapid growth lately. For the optimisation of container traffic quay cranes are utilis ed. Currently there are three main problems considering the operation of cranes: assignment of cranes to vessels, the issue of quay time and service assignment, and the problem with scheduling of containers handles by quay cranes and their sequence. This paper provides a literature review of seven papers studying these issues. In the article called â€Å"Quay crane scheduling problem† the authors recognise the problem with quay crane scheduling due to the growth of container traffic. The sequence of discharging needs to be determined for a set number of cranes, which will shorten the time of task completion [1]. The important aspect of scheduling is the creation of balance between the stacks of loads and the number of bays. It is suggested that more thorough approach towards stacks and loads planning in each bay will optimize the operation of quay cranes.Advertising Looking for proposal on engineering? Berth allocation problem or BAP is viewed as one of the major challenges in this sphere. The problem was addressed through an application of genetic algorithm heuristic which was used for various aspects of the problem. The obtained results were tested in order to identify the best, worst and average outcomes. The authors of the study called â€Å"A joint quay crane assignment and scheduling problem: formulation, solution algorithm and computational results† offer a simplified approach towards the problem of quay crane scheduling and integrated assignment. The problem is viewed from the perspective of a crane-to-bay assignment [6]. As a result a Lagrangian relaxation algorithm is developed in order to solve the proble m. After that the relaxed problem is solved through the constraint generation method and the performance of the Lagrangian heuristic is evaluated. In the paper called â€Å"An integrated quay crane assignment and scheduling problem† Theodorou and Diabat view container handling efficiency as the productivity of quay cranes responsible for such operations as loading and unloading of containers [7]. The authors develop a formulation for quay crane assignment. Quay crane scheduling problem is addressed with the help of genetic algorithm and the results obtained after the application of the algorithm are evaluated to determine the efficiency of calculations. Fu and Diabat, the authors of the paper titled â€Å"A Lagrangian relaxation approach for solving the integrated quay crane assignment and scheduling problem† offer an alternative approach to the problems of quay crane integrated assignment and scheduling.Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Quay C ranes Weight Management Problems specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is recognised that these two issues are always addressed independently from each other. As an alternative, Fu and Diabat suggest addressing them simultaneously this time and offer a mathematical formulation for these problems [2]. The calculations take into consideration quay crane interference. The proposed model is addressed with the help of Lagrangian relaxation and the results are evaluated. In the paper by Fu, Diabat, and Tsai called â€Å"A multi-vessel quay crane assignment and scheduling problem: Formulation and heuristic solution approach† the authors approach the problem with the assignment of quay cranes to vessels and the tasks fulfilled by cranes in a sequence [3]. Important factors such as safety of distances between operating quay cranes, priority of vessels and ordering conditions are taken into consideration in the course of calculations. Sinc e the problem is complex and has many layers, a genetic algorithm is applied to it. The evaluation of the obtained results confirms their validity. The study by Simrin, Alkawaleet and Diabat titled â€Å"A Lagrangian Relaxation Based Heuristic for the Static Berth Allocation Problem using the Cutting Plane Method† maintains that there is a variety of approaches to the solution of berth allocation problem. The difference between these approaches is the way they view berth allocation, as a static or dynamic problem [4]. The layout applied to quays is also different – it can be continuous, discrete or hybrid. Berth allocation problem is viewed as a vital aspect of optimization of work of quay cranes just like in the article called â€Å"The dynamic berth allocation problem: A linearised formulation† by Simrin and Diabat.Advertising Looking for proposal on engineering? Definition and Discussion of Feminist Rhetoric

Definition and Discussion of Feminist Rhetoric Feminist rhetoric is the study and practice of feminist discourses in public and private life. In content, says Karlyn Kohrs Campbell*, feminist rhetoric drew its premises from a radical analysis of patriarchy, which identified the man-made world as one built on the oppression of women...In addition, it incorporates a style of communication known as consciousness-raising (Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition, 1996). See Examples and Observations below. Also, the following readings provide examples and related concepts: Seneca Falls ResolutionsLanguage and Gender StudiesSusan B. Anthony and the struggle for womens right to voteRogerian Argument Examples and Observations The following examples and observations consider feminist rhetoric through different lenses, offering more contexts for understanding. Evolution of Feminist Rhetoric In the 1980s, feminist rhetoric scholars began making three moves: writing women into the history of rhetoric, writing feminist issues into theories of rhetoric, and writing feminist perspectives into rhetorical criticism. Initially, these scholars drew on feminist scholarship from other disciplines...Once inspired, however, feminist rhetoric scholars began writing scholarship from the site of rhetoric and composition... In the midst of this scholarly activity, intersections of rhetoric and feminist studies have been institutionalized within rhetoric and composition studies, thanks largely to the work of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, which was organized by Winifred Horner, Jan Swearingen, Nan Johnson, Marjorie Curry Woods, and Kathleen Welch in 1988-1989 and was carried on by scholars such as Andrea Lunsford, Jackie Royster, Cheryl Glenn, and Shirley Logan. Jarratt views sophistic rhetoric as a feminist rhetoric and one with significant ethical implications. The sophists believed that law and truth derived from nomoi, local habits or customs that could change from city to city, region to region. The philosophers in the Platonic tradition, of course, challenged this sort of relativism, insisting on the ideal of Truth (logos, universal laws that would be acommunal). Source: James E. E-Learning in Dental Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

E-Learning in Dental Education - Essay Example According to the essay findings the context of explaining dentistry alongside education refers to the need with which the required education can be imparted to students. Students receive knowledge and information in a number of ways ranging from classroom teaching to reading books to tapes and videos as also live demonstrations. But, as far as the theoretical knowledge and the sharing of opinion and views are concerned, the volume of information that is available today has called for a need to look towards a different medium of providing this information. The rise in the popularity of the internet and its accompanying popular methods of teaching have not only allowed the prospect of making information to be available, but also allowed it to be searchable and presented in a number of electronic formats. From the discussion it is clear that dental science is one of the most widely researched medical sciences in the world today, where new discoveries are being made every day. With tooth decay being acknowledged as the most common disease in the world, it is no doubt that one of the most visited professional during a person’s lifetime is a dentist. Studying to become a dentist requires years of study and practice as the science of studying one’s set of teeth is enormous. The basic requirement for information and knowledge in the modern world is to allow it to be shared and made widely available.

Child Abuse and Neglect of Children with Disabilities Article

Child Abuse and Neglect of Children with Disabilities - Article Example Turner et. al. (2011) had a wide sample of over 4,000 participants thus making their findings reliable. They also gave possible explanations as to why certain ability types attracted certain forms of victimizations. It was laudable that they used a comprehensive definition of disability types and did not ignore other less-visible types of disability like anxiety and post traumatic disorder. One key problem with the research is that it relied on children’s or parent’s self-reported diagnosis of a disability (Babbie, 2007). It is likely that some individuals may be suffering from a disability and do not even know it. Additionally, participants with more than one disability could have confounded the outcomes. If a form of victimization caused a disability earlier on in the participant’s life, then a cycle of victimization may result, yet the researchers were not concerned with this past. Their findings were different from others because they can assist in understanding how child abuse arises among disabled children. This can cause stakeholders to work towards eliminating those risks (Finkelhon et. al., 2005). Also, because the research looked at the rate of victimization among disability types, it would be possible to determine which groups are highly at risk and work on protecting them. Hill et. al. (2011) sought to find out the prevalence of children with disabilities in the welfare system. They did so by collecting data from Minnesota’s welfare system and noting the quantity of individuals in this group. They also looked at the relationship between being identified as disabled and having a substantiated maltreatment or possessing certain demographic traits. The association between out-of-home placement and child disability in the welfare system is studied; the hypotheses were proved. This research is impressive because it considered an unlikely and often ignored category of children

Recommendation paper about google Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

Recommendation paper about google - Essay Example Based upon the SWOT analysis, the summary of the important recommendations that are provided for the direction of Google’s strategy are as follows (a) tailoring its product to suit local markets rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all strategy (b) integrating its products to allow customers to shift seamlessly from one product to the other (c) moving into the social networking domain and (d) addressing privacy issues in order to promote widespread use of its products. The company is named â€Å"Google†, a play on the word â€Å"Googol† that is a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by a hundred zeros.(www.google.com). This represents the spirit of the company, to be constantly innovating and branching out into new areas, so that the company has now evolved into a global enterprise employing 16,800 people and reporting revenues of $16,594 million for the fiscal year ended December 2007.(Datamonitor, 2008). But as this report will demonstrate, staying at the forefront of innovation is important, but so is consolidation of the gains that Google has achieved so far, as well as effective integration and streamlining of its products and operations. Google has been at the forefront of innovation over the years, continuously adding improved features. Some of these include AdWords, Google Scholar, Google Earth and Froogle. Over a short period of twelve years, the company has evolved into a global technology leader that is focused upon improving the ways in which people connect with information. It occupies a strong market position through the use of its proprietary technology and infrastructure (DataMonitor, 2008). It’s AdWords and AdSense programs have been significant generators of revenue from advertising. But the weaknesses in the company are the failure to effectively integrate products, and a weak presence in the social networking domain. The company also faces competitive threats from companies

Influence of Trade Unions on Collective Bargaining

Influence of Trade Unions on Collective Bargaining Critically Evaluate Trade Union Strategies to increase the influence of collective bargaining with Multi National Corporations as a means of regulating terms and conditions of employment To reply the question above, firstly we should know what are trade unions? The answer to that is, A trade union (British ) or labor union (American) is an organization of labourers who have bonded together to achieve same goals such as better working conditions. The labour union, through its leadership, bargain with the multinationals on behalf of trade union members and negotiates worker contracts (collective bargaining) with employers. This may include the negotiation of pay, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies. The agreement negotiated by the trade union leaders are binding on the rank and file members and the employer and in some cases on other non-member workers. (First published by George Allen and Unwin Ltd (London) in 1952, and subject of reprints Foreword by Arthur Deakin) Discovered in Europe, trade unions became famous in many countries during the Industrial Revolution, when the lack of skill necessary to perform most jobs shifted employment bargaining power almost completely to the employers side, causing many workers to be mistreated and underpaid. Labour union organizations may be consist of individual workers, professionals, past workers, or the unemployed. The most common, but by no means only, purpose of these organizations is maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment. Published by Batch worth Press (London) in 1949 In last 300 years, many trade unions has developed in different form, influenced be different political parties for their objectives which include Provision of benefits to members, Collective bargaining Trade unions put many efforts in collective bargaining with multinational organizations. Now what collective bargaining is? Collective bargaining is a process between employers and workers to reach a decision regarding the rights and duties of workers at work. Collective bargaining aims to reach a collective agreement which usually sets out issues such as employees pay, working hours, training, health and safety, and rights to participate in workplace or company affairs. During the bargaining process, employees are typically represented by a trade union. The union may negotiate with a one employer (who is typically representing a companys shareholders) or may negotiate with a federation of businesses, depending on the country, to reach an industry wide agreement. Buidens, Wayne, and others. Collective Gaining: A Bargaining Alternative. Phi Delta Kappan 63 (1981): 244-245 A collective agreement work as a labor contract between an employer and one or more unions. Collective bargaining is a process of negotiation between members of a labour union and employers (generally represented by management, in some countries by an employers organization) in respect of the terms and conditions of employment of employees, such as wages, hours of work, working conditions and grievance-procedures, and about the rights and responsibilities of trade unions. The parties often refer to the result of the negotiation as a collective bargaining. Answering the question Trade Union Strategies to increase the influence of collective bargaining with Multi National Corporations as a means of regulating terms and conditions of employment Moving further we have to evaluate trade union strategies to increase the influence of collective bargaining by enlarging maturity of collective bargaining implies larger of the rational wayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ This reasonable procedure involves the employee, employer, and union settling on the basis of facts rather than name-calling, table pounding, and emotionalism (Sloane, Witney, 203-204). Therefore, in order to make collective bargaining more rational certain procedure are taken in to action. Edward Peters has written a guide to better negotiating titled Strategy and Tactics in Labor Talks. In this book he suggest good wayss for obtaining a more rational negotation. The first important step toward better bargaining is to realize the essential purpose of talks and importance of talks. In a bargaining conflict, there are three main activities in which each party is involved: (1) attempt to impress each other, the workers, and public opinion by advocating the merits of their current pos itions; (2) indicate bonding to each other; and (3) explore the prospectus, in terms of each others maximum and minimum expectancies, of a settlement without an economic contest, or, at worst, a contest of minimum duration (Peters, Edward, 41). Peters says that cosmopolitan bargainers often underestimate the importance of good preparation and presentation of their position because they feel that these are just window dressing for the harsh realities of economic strength (Peters, 42). It is true that economic strength is important, but a position reinforced by logic and reason can often exert a crucial influence (Peters, 42). Another step toward better talks is preparation and the setting of realistic goals. Peters states that the pragmatic or impracticality of a collective bargaining goal is a matter of foresight, not something to be determined by hindsight (Peters, 60). An example of this that pertains to management is that sometimes there are items that a labour union cannot and w ill not grant. If management does not prepare enough and makes the assumption that the union can and will negotiate on any proposal submitted by management, they risk the possibility of strikes. There are many other issues overwhich trade unions may agreee to lose a plant in an economic contest rather than endanger itself with a big group (Peters, 60). If the administrations set more realistic goals then the results may not be that harmful. In order to set realistic goals, a criteria for realistic goals must be established. Most conveyour, according to Peters, would agree that a realistic goal, to be attained without an economic contest, must be based on the following minimum considerations: (1) has the other party the ability to grant the issue? The employer must be able to grant the issue without any serious damage to operations. The union must be able to grant the issue without issue without serious internal injury, or any danger to an organization, or losing out to a rival union ; also wi thout seriously impairing its external relationships in the labor movement, or with other employers; are you warranted, by your strength, in setting such a goal? (3) Is your goal within the bargaining expectancy of the other party? This last point may be disregarded only if you are ready to wage an economic contest for your minimum goal (Peters, 61-62). These criteria should be fully examined before setting any goal or pressing any issue in a labor negotiation. Priorities must be established and ranked in order of impact and importance (Richardson, Reed C., 128). Even though setting realistic goals help in talks, a course of action must be pursued in order to obtain those goals. Prestige plays an essential role in talks. Reputation is an intangible quality in the sense that it is a symbol-a symbol of the potential and actual strengths of the parties in all of their relationships. Prestige reflects itself in the relationship of the parties to eac h other and especially to the employee in the plant. A unions basic strength lies in the support of its own membership (Peters, 85-86). Other factors that affect during talks are sign language, fringe issues, and negotiable factors. However, the most important tactics take place before the actual talks. Conveyour who approach the bargaining bench without sufficient factual information to handle the growing complexities of labor relationsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦operate at a distinct disadvantage (Sloane, Witney, 213). Most larger unions and almost all major corporations today have their own research departments to gather data and conduct surveys. Only if both parties research and establish a framework for talks can they successfully obtain results within their range of acceptability. With this in mind, collective bargaining can mature to its desired rationality in the management-labor relationship. Conclusion By carefully reading the above matter we can say that cooperation plays an important and crucial role for the relationship between management and its employees and their trade union representatives and though it is not surprising that internationalization of management through the multinational cooperations and had adverse impact on the relationship and trade union strategies. There are several dimensions and concern of the trade union with respect to the multinational cooperations. There are number of advantages acquiring to the firms as their multinational nature. To counteract the strength of these multinational, trade union organizations have developed new institutional structures and strategic thrust. Trade union strengthing, legal regulation and cross national cooperative strategies are explored as they occur at every level of trade union movement. And the central role of these trade unions strategies is to the development of trade union bargaining capabilities. Words: 1480

Girls of Riyadh

Discuss in what ways Girls of Riyadh demystified or confirmed your gender perceptions of the quintessential Muslim society that Saudi Arabia is meant to represent. Girls of Riyadh is the poignant delineation of Saudi Arabia’s secluded society where young women who silently cherish westernized aspirations are weaved within the strict conventional web of the Arab law.Alsanea challenges the dictatorial and Islamist regimes of Saudi Arabia by contentiously incorporating prohibited issues such as homosexuality, the quest of love, sexuality and subjugation of the women in her work. She generally attempts to demonstrate â€Å"that a Western code of life in an Arab society is more preferable and suitable than the Islamic one† (Mubarak, 2011). Subsequently, she reiterates, between Muslims and the West, the existing chasm which is grounded on the latter’s perception of Islam as an obstruction to the Arab woman and her struggle for independence. This paper accordingly elucid ates the various ways this novel demystifies gender perceptions in the typical Muslim society that Saudi Arabia is meant to represent. The characterization of the four protagonists namely Gamrah, Sadeem, Michelle and Lamees condemns Islamist fundamentalism as misogynist and calls for autonomous and secular political legal frameworks. The text simultaneously divulges the prevailing inconsistency between the opposite sexes in the Saudi society. While Doumato (1992) articulates in her work that Arab women are prohibited to travel without their ‘mahram’ or male guardian, Abdulla (1981) further exposes the prevailing sex segregation in Arab countries where the Muslim girl is anticipated to learn how to become an ideal housewife to her husband and a successful mother to her children instead of looking forward to join competitive fields such as geology, meteorology and so on which are explicitly for the men.Alsanea, by applying western tints to her novel, defies the conservativ e Arab society with the emergence of her four female characters who confront the political culture of Saudi Arabia as a social force. With the proliferation of technology in the 21st century, Alsanea uses the Internet as a medium to communicate to her readers. By so doing, she connects both male and female readers in a country where â€Å"integration of the sexes, at least in public, is still non-existent† and where â€Å"veiling is enforced† (Bahry, 1982).The virtual interaction between Lamees and the other masculine cyber users remarkably contradicts the Arab society where such crossing point is out of question. The internet, â€Å"the narrative topological main figure† (Ghadeer, 2006), becomes also a space where the narrator and her virtual female characters (â€Å"I’ve decided to change all the names of the people I will write about†) interact with the youth culture anonymously to expose the horrendous principles of the Arab society. It additio nally acts as a prominent tool in shaping the feminine’s individualism.Lamees, for instance, teaches Gamrah how to make use of the internet which helps her to isolate herself from the bitter memories of Rashid’s betrayal: â€Å"With the help of Lamees, Gamrah got to know the world of chatting†. Alsanea provokes the conventional Saudi community as Lamees plunges in the virtual world to such an extent that she can even figure out the dissimilarities between men in Riyadh and those of the eastern and western provinces: â€Å"guys from Riyadh are a little different than the eastern province boys, and they’re different from the western province and so it goes†.Virtual communication hence reconstructs the existence of the wired Saudi girl beneath her abaya into an inquisitive connection of primitive culture and technology. Digital technology appropriates the reality of the Arab feminine personality as it enables her to show that she also has a voice. As such, this Arab feminine struggle broadens democratic space in the society as a whole (Esfandiari, 2004). At the same time as the author connects orality with the internet, she deliberately underlines the real and the fictional.According to Ghadeer, this new mode of writing does not signify that Alsanea is discarding the â€Å"old form of narration or suggesting its loss† but she uses this writing style to unveil the undeniable social taboos. This is evidenced as cyberspace readers respond to the prohibited subjects brought forward by Alsanea. The taboo issues as such become overtly discussed concerns. Um Nuwayyir, for example, is thunderstruck when she is informed that her son is â€Å"defining his sexual identity† because unlike in the West to be homosexual in the Arab countries signals â€Å"an utter calamity, an illness worse than cancer. The author dismantles the hypocritical attitudes toward homosexuality which she attests is a normal behaviour that should be ac cepted in any society and by so doing her work becomes a driving force against the traditional Arab community (Mubarak, 2011). In this way Alsanea thoroughly condemns the Islamic Arab communities and distinguishes them with Western civilization. Michelle, as evidence, perpetually laments about Riyadh for not being a city like the West where â€Å"Everyone was minding his own business. However as Nuwwayir ultimately identifies his masculinity the author unconsciously emphasizes that homosexuality has no place in a country like Riyadh where gender representation remains constantly stereotyped. It is likewise outrageous as Alsanea depicts the persistence of constraints on the binary interaction between the two sexes in Riyadh even when they are out of country. To escape from her grief Sadeem leaves for London where she becomes acquainted to Firas to whom she has to prove continuously that she is not of loose character since she does not wear the abaya and interacts openly with men.Als anea henceforth demonstrates that the severe conservative Arab rules exceed geography as well. To some extent the Saudi girl is not really liberated even if she is far from her native land. This feminine narration consequently stirs the whole media as it overtly discusses how the girls impersonate the opposite sex by travelling without any male guardian and flourish sexual desires instead of confining â€Å"their bodies to foggy corridors of old traditions and patriarchal taboos† (Ghadeer). In short, it does not completely share the view that â€Å"woman is to man as butter is to sun. † The novel also highlights issues which the society rejects and alleges that both sexes are prejudiced, thus protesting that Saudi Arabia â€Å"is a fruit cocktail of social classes where no class ever mixes with another. † Michelle, the half-American and half-Saudi girl, besides, cannot marry the man of her life as Faisal’s mother, who declares this relationship fruitless, rejects her. Similarly Rashid is forced by his family to marry a Saudi girl instead of his Japanese girlfriend.Nevertheless by leaving the former for his girlfriend suggests a courageous move on the part of Rashid since unlike Faisal he draws criticism in a nation whereby people are not authorized to date until married. Lamee likewise has to split her friendship with Fatimah simply because the Arab society does not favour Sunni-Shi’a interaction. The character of Um Nuwwayir in view of that is used as a pawn to the liberation of the young lovers. Her house becomes a space where the â€Å"hapless lovers† transcends the regulation denying the mixing of unmarried people: â€Å"Um Nuwayyir’s place was the safe haven par excellence for sweethearts. It is noteworthy that, until the subject of marriage crops up, the respective relationship of Michelle-Faisal and Lamees-Firas remains secured. In other words, the author portrays wedding as a theme, which communicates th e message that practically behind every matrimony, lies the trend of incomplete lost love. As a result, at the end of the novel Sadeem marries her cousin Tariq not because she loves him but to avenge the two previous men who almost devastated her. Faisal as well marries out of compulsion while Michelle and Gamrah remain single and the experiences of her friends guide Lamees to make the right choice in her life.Among the four girls she is the apparently the only one whose married life blossoms. As a matter of fact, as Clark in the work of Fiske (2005) explicates, the woman cannot fit choices to herself and the only option left to her is agreement, hence enunciating her conforming nature. Gamrah, divorced and left with a child, has to face the hurdles of her society, â€Å"shrinking, secretly and silently† since the norms of the society does not permit her a second marriage. Clark hence stipulates, â€Å"like the kitten †¦ her eye cannot help but follow the kaleidoscopic movement of the objects surrounding her. Like all the Saudi girls, the female characters must content themselves with their culture’s contradictory stances. Girls of Riyadh moreover reinforces the Orientalist stereotypes of the Arab women, either as the overtly eroticized, just like Sadeem whose erotic conduct is apparent as she â€Å"strewed across the sofa, the candles placed here and there †¦ the black nightgown that revealed more of her body than it concealed †, or as intensely subjugated women in the male dominated world, like Gamrah who has to live under the patriarchal rules. As the novel unravels, Alsanea nonetheless obliterates this orientalist perspective as she stresses that the Riyadh woman is not â€Å"a sexual symbol† or â€Å"closeted in the palace’s women’s quarters†(Mubarak). This is demystified as Michelle confronts Faisal by attending his wedding which depicts she is strong enough to resist his betrayal and is not in n eed of his ‘manly’ support. Similarly, Lamees weds someone of her own academic position which again delineates that she is not the ‘Other’.Ultimately this proves that the hetero image of the women perceived by Orientalism is falsified as Fanon (1965) clarifies, â€Å"It was the colonialist’s frenzy †¦ his gamble †¦ to bring this woman within his re ach, to make her a possible object of possession. † Throughout this essay, it is significant that the rules the Arab law transmits do not utterly correspond to the Islamic teachings which, Shands (2008) makes clear, have been misinterpreted as â€Å"media generally tend to judge Islam in the light of the behaviour and actions of some Muslims. Likewise while the Riyadh society surrounds the woman in its suffocating grip, Islam conversely advocates the protection of woman on men’s part. Esfandiari, in regard to this, articulates that the Islam practised in Nigeria or Saudi Arabia may not necessarily reciprocate to the Islam in Indonesia. Significantly the roles and privileges of women in any nation â€Å"are the product of its particularly history, culture, and political character. † As illustration, despite being literate the Riyadh woman is not supposed to sign: â€Å"The sheikh says fingerprint, not signature. The men are the only ones who sign their names. † This does not however means the same in other Arab countries like Egypt. This paper demonstrates that although Riyadh is compacted with severe regulations concerning the women, Alsanea overtly fights against them to reveal that her girls have the potential to enrich the society. Subsequently after confronting much obstacles the female characters identify their own individuality which push them to construct their advancement. They become the channel through which any Saudi girl can modify the cultural and social circumstances of any woman. In addition, the author reveals that the misrepresent ation of the Arab woman is due to the failure of the Western literature to comprehend her. Literature should henceforth be adopted as a means to approach â€Å"different cultures through the similarities and not differences† (Shaheen, 2001). Bibliography Alsanea, Rajaa. (2007). Cross Cultural Communication Essay

A country that was annexed by another country is sure to have exchanged or been impacted culturally and in many other aspects. An excellent example of this could be the British India. India was ruled over by Britishers for almost 350 years. Therefore, many traits and systems in India today are derived from the time they were under the British rule. One of the most vivid illustrations of this is the schooling system and English as a medium language for teaching and learning. The number of English speakers in India is more than 125 million people (â€Å"Indiaspeaks,† 2010). Analyzing from the graph of Hofstede’s cross cultural dimensions of India and England, it is clear that both countries rank closely in two dimensions which are Masculinity and Uncertainty Avoidance. In terms of masculinity, both countries especially India, rank very closely to the neutral point. India scored 56 and United Kingdom scored 66. Even though India scored very close to the mid range, it actually is a very masculine country specially in terms of displaying success and power (â€Å"India,† n.d.). However, India is also a country with ancient spiritual history which involves richness of culture and traditions that were shaped by its main religion i.e., Hinduism. This often reigns in people from indulging in Masculine displays to the extent that they might be inclined to (â€Å"India,† n.d.). As for Britain, it is considered a masculine culture. Nevertheless, there is confusion among foreigners as to how can English people value modesty and understatement and at the same time be highly success driven (â€Å"United Kingdom,† n.d.). India scored 40 on Uncertainty Avoidance which means that the country has a medium low preference for avoiding uncertainty. It is due to the perception that nothing has to be perfect nor has to go exactly as planned. Indians have very high tolerance for the unexpected and is welcomed as a break from monotony (â€Å"India,† n.d.). They believe in the notion of adjustment and adaptation. Each situation or problem they face will be handled and taken care of differently. Their behaviors are usually influenced by circumstances. In this dimension the UK scored 35 which indicates that England has a low preference for avoiding uncertainty. According to Geert Hofstede, they are happy to â€Å"make it up as they go along† changing plan as new information comes to light. On the other hand, both countries do have interesting differences in their scores of Power Distance and Individuality. Power Distance is one main dimension where both countries have largest difference which is 42. Indian scored 77 whereas the UK scored only 35. India is strictly a large power distant society where hierarchy is appreciated and accepted. In this kind of society, inequality and centralization of power prevail. Privileges and status symbols are popular. People with no power or younger are not allowed to have a voice. Parents teach children obedience and children ought to treat parents with respect (â€Å"Hofstede,† n.d.) . Teachers are considered as gurus as well. An illustration of this can be seen from the ancient history of India where Gurus taught everything, right from academic to wisdom, to children and groomed them to be good human beings. In terms of business, subordinates are usually not consulted during decision-making. However, they expect to be told what to do. An ideal boss is a benevolent autocrat or good father (â€Å"Hofstede,† n.d.). The UK is a small power distance society. It is interesting to see Britain among one of the small power distance societies as Britain has a rich culture and heritage as well as the monarchy system where there are princes and princesses in the society. In small power distance like Britain, inequalities are minimized. Parents and children treat one another as equals. Teachers are experts who transfer academic knowledge and not life virtues. An ideal boss is a resourceful democrat who consults his subordinates while making any decision. Another dimension where both countries differ greatly in terms of their scores is Individuality. It is the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members. It has to do with whether people’s self-image is defined as I or We (Hofstede, n.d.). India scored 48, therefore, it is a collectivistic society whereas Britain scored 89 which makes it a clear individualistic society. In collectivistic society, there is a high preference for belonging where individuals are expected to act in accordance with what other members of the group expect one to do. Behaviors and actions of people in this society are highly influenced by opinions of their family, relatives and members of their social network group. In contrast, in individualistic society, people are supposed to look after themselves and their direct family only (Hofstede, n.d.). British are highly private people, children are taught to think for themselves and make their own goals in life. The path to happiness is believed to be through personal fulfillment. Another interesting aspect of culture was looked into by Deborah Tannen who wrote a book called â€Å"Languages and Linguistics† where he explained a deep connection between culture and languages and how both are interrelated. One aspect that Tannen stated in his book is about Crosscultural Miscommunication which is about rising and falling intonation. For English, rising intonation means questioning and falling intonation reveals inconsiderateness and indifference which are rude and impolite. Problem arises when business deal or agreement is to take place because this is the most crucial time when contracts are to be signed and both parties definitely do not wish for anything to go wrong. However, just a drop of sound can change almost the whole scenario. It shows that speakers of different cultural backgrounds develop systematically different conventions for using and interpreting linguistic features (Tannen, 2005). Hence, it is very important for everybody, especially those who work in the service field to recognize this difference and work towards improving it. The last important aspect from Tannen’s theory is High involvement and High considerateness. Since Indian society is a highly collectivistic society, it is a high involvement society as well. People in the same area will consider their neighbors as their family members. This stands true at the time of crisis; people would gather and ask with concern about the story and offer suggestions and aid that they could provide. However, Britain is a private society where people are individualistic. They do not like to impose on other people’s business unless they are related or close to the person. Imposition can be taken as ill-mannered or rude in some circumstances. In conclusion, India and British are two completely different cultures that couldn’t have had anything in common if British hadn’t ruled India. Both countries adopted and shared some of the good values and characteristics with each other contributing to the development of quality of life and relationship between both to prosper. Without Hofstede’s dimensions and Tannen’s theories, cross cultural communication would still be difficult and this would hinder growth of business, tourism and cultural sectors of each and every country. Full Expert Review The Official SAT Study Guide

Full Expert Review The Official SAT Study Guide SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The Official SAT Study Guide is the most important book to have in your prep program. Nearly every student who's serious about SAT prep has this in his or her library. Even despite its obvious strengths, the book has its major drawbacks, and it will not be enough for most students. Read this detailed review to find out what the cons of this book are, and how you should integrate it as part of your prep. Note: This review is for the Official Study Guide to the Old, pre-March-2016 SAT. Read our review of the Official Study Guide to the New SAT here! Why trust this review? When you get advice on the internet, it's important to understand why you should believe the advice you're receiving. Because your SAT score is important, follow the wrong advice, and it might be too late to improve your score. To be transparent, here’s why you might be able to trust this review more than others: I like to think that I know what I’m talking about.I scoredtwo perfect scores on the SATand have worked personally with thousands of students prepping for the SAT. I’ve worked with students at all levels, from people at a 1200 level to people aiming for a 2300+. Other writers often don't have the expertise to differentiate between books, and they recommend books as an afterthought (and you can probably tell). I don’t get paid for these recommendations, and I don’t get paid if you buy these books.I’ve studied dozens of books for SAT prep, and I review the books that I come across. Other sites, especially about.com and reviews.com, get paid for featuring books and get a kickback when you buy a book they recommend. One disclaimer: I’m co-founder ofPrepScholar, an online SAT/ACT prep program. I believe we’ve built the best prep program available right now. Itdiagnoses your strengths and weaknessesand gives you a structured all-in-one program, combining the best aspects of the books below, so you know exactly what you need to study at every point. But I want to stress that you don’t need a program to excel at the SAT. In fact, writing this guide may lose us some customers, since you might decide that you don’t need a program at all. But if you decide that you don’t want to manage 10 books and want an integrated complete program that customizes to your learning, check PrepScholar SAT out. Official SAT Study Guide Review When I consider the quality of a book, I think about a few important questions: Who's the author, and what is his or her experience with the subject matter? How effective is the book, and why? What are the book's main pros and cons? We'll consider each question below. About the Author: The College Board It doesn't get much better than this. The book is the official book published by the creators and administrators of the SAT, the College Board. They've put in 10 full-length practice tests, and because they're official questions from previous administrations of the SAT, they're the best set of questions available anywhere. How effective is this book? We’ve written at length about theimportance of official SAT practice questions. The SAT test is weird and tests concepts in ways that you’ve never seen in school before. This means that you need to train with realistic questions so you learn the patterns of the SAT. Official SAT tests released by the College Board are the gold standard for SAT practice questions. This book contains 10 such tests. Each test released by the College Board contains real questions given to real students at previous administrations of the SAT. The quality of official questions is far better than questions written by unofficial sources like Kaplan and Barron's. With that said, this book will not be a complete prep program for most students. It doesn't go into detail on test strategy and tricks - after all, the College Board has maintained since the beginning of the SAT that the SAT is not able to be prepped for (which we know is factually false). It also doesn't provide focused practice on specific strengths and weaknesses, which we believe is critical to an effective prep program. Its answer explanations are also quite poor, as they don't teach you how to solve the problem - they just tell you why the correct answer is correct, and why the incorrect answers are incorrect. The book also doesn't tell you how to use it - it's important that you reflect on your mistakes, for example, and space out your prep. In the end, this book is great for what it is - 10 practice tests - but not for more than that. The Official SAT Guide's Pros and Cons Pros: The best set of practice tests you can get anywhere, period. 10 full-length tests should cover all but the most ambitious students. Since each one takes at least 4 hours to complete and review, this is already 40 hours of material. Answers for each question are available online. Cons: Answer explanations are not helpful for self-learning for most students. Most of the explanations read like this: â€Å"A is wrong because A is wrong. B is correct for these reasons† rather than showing you how to solve the question from step 1. You need to understand yourself well to learn from your mistakes. Answers are available only online and through a clunky web interface that’s annoying to use. Book doesn’t provide other instructional material. If you’re bad at algebra, you can’t rely on this book alone. People are buying it purely for the tests, and the College Board knows this. Taking practice tests without a system for learning isn’t going to improve your score, and the book doesn’t provide guidance on how to do this. Overall Rating This book is a critical piece of any student's prep program. There simply is no better source of official prep questions. It's so important that we've integrated it as a central part of our online SAT prep program. To use this book effectively, you'll definitely need advice on how best to use it, and balance it with other materials. You can also getall free official practice tests here, but they don’t have answer explanations. Overall Rating: 90/100 What's next? The Role of Human Resource Planning for Organizations Essay

The Role of Human Resource Planning for Organizations - Essay Example How the top management domains within this organization understand the dictum of human resource planning is something that derives sound results. Adequate planning is the need of the hour because it gives the top management a clear cut vision as to what it should expect at the hands of the middle management and the employees that are working under its realms (Idris, 1998). The human resource planning is basically the yardstick that decides the future hiring and firing procedures which are present within the enterprise. One must understand that the human resource planning avenues can easily be understood if proper measures are undertaken with the basic ideology to guarantee that sanity must prevail within the related ranks of organizational growth and development (Dinteman, 2003). Human resource planning will result in better standards in terms of performance measurement. If these standards are properly taken care of, the human resource planning standards will always be deemed as poin ts of success. Since the human resource planning

Potential and Possible Consequences of Systemic Financial Crisis Essay

Potential and Possible Consequences of Systemic Financial Crisis - Essay Example The paper now outlines the principal theoretical approaches to the financial crisis. The first two sections cover, respectively, the concept of contagious runs on financial institutions and markets, and the aspects of financial regulation, which seek to protect against such events. I then assess two 'traditional' views of the financial crisis, which attempt to explain exclusively the totality of financial crises, namely the financial fragility and monetarist approaches. These are followed by more recent paradigms, which seek to clarify the mechanisms involved in crises, namely uncertainty, credit rationing, asymmetric information/agency costs, and aspects of the dynamics of dealership markets. It is important, to begin with, an argument of contagious runs since they are the principal identifying factor for crises. Of all the types of risks to banks, the focus here is on liquidity risk, which is the inability to obtain funding to finance operations, though it may be linked to interest -rate and credit risk. Although most of the analysis covers banks, these concepts can also be applied to other financial institutions and even securities markets. Any event, however extraneous, but including runs on or insolvency of other banks can according to Diamond and Dybvig (1983), provoke such runs. Such an effect might be particularly potent for banks, which are creditors of the bank in distress. Runs are also likely when the equity of banks is a small proportion of balance-sheet totals, as depositors' fears of moral hazard increase, assuming managers' actions cannot be perfectly monitored (L. J. White 1989). And, more generally, in the presence of asymmetric information, which arises from banks' creation of non-marketable assets, runs may be triggered by any event that makes depositors change their beliefs about banks' riskiness.  Ã‚

How social network has bad effect on people Essay

How social network has bad effect on people - Essay Example positive advantages, social media does have a number of drawbacks on individuals and society alike and it is important for these drawbacks to be analyzed so as to better understand how these negative drawbacks can be avoided. Although the use of social media has been noted to have a positive effect on our social lives as it enables us to easily keep in-touch with each other, of note however is that a number of negative effects are associated with it; social media is thought to cause it to be difficult for individuals to distinguish the positive and meaningful relationships that they are able to foster in the real world, and the myriad of causal relationships that they form through social media. We now tend to focus more n the less meaningful social media connections at the expense of the meaningful real life connections that we have made. Although social media has positively impacted our social lives as it has served to provide increased intimacy between friends, this attribute is also being widely used by predators that practice cyber bullying. The devastation that is wrought by online attacks can have the effect of leaving victims with deep emotional scars and as illustrated by a number of well-publici zed cases, cyber-bullying has at times resulted in victims being driven to committing suicide (Ryan and Cooper, 115). Social media has also been noted to have an impact in our social lives as constantly knowing where one’s friends are going, what they are doing or seeing can be deemed as being voyeuristic. If not careful, users can end up comparing themselves to their friends and in the process generating feelings of inadequacy. If they are not engaged in a process whereby they are doing something as exiting or great, they might start feeling worthless as their self esteem gradually becomes dented (Szalay et al. 285). If not careful, users can attempt to try and counteract this by making up stories and in the process find themselves trapped in an ever expanding
